THE
MEANING OF THE NAME:
The
title, Ladies
Are Hustlers Too
came about in 2006 while I was on tour with The Hustler’s 10
Commandments. At my various book signings, certain women would
occasionally stop by and ask, “Is this a book for men only?” Almost
immediately, I would respond, “No! Ladies are hustlers too!”
I
guess (at the time) most women didn’t identify with the title,
hustler
the same way men did. The images and songs in popular Hip-Hop music all
associated the term with men who were in the pursuit of money. For
example, rapper
Rick Ross
had just released the anthem
“Everyday I’m
Hustlin’”, which had everyone from drug dealers to attorneys nodding
their head in agreement. Somehow though, it seemed many business women
didn’t think the term applied to them.
Thus
began my crusade.
At
first, I used the phrase “Ladies are hustlers too” as a sales pitch
to lure more women to my book signings across the U.S. The positive
response from the ladies led me to turn the phrase into one of my
popular slogans. Later, I placed the slogan on t-shirts and started an
initiative to recognize talented, hard-working female entrepreneurs that
often go unnoticed.
The purpose of the initiative was to let women to know that they are
respected for being intelligent and goal-oriented. I learned that women
felt it was important to hear this message come from a man, (as
opposed to a woman who might be viewed as simply trying to seek
validation). I’m sure fellow hustler Jay-Z
felt the same way as he made a point to let the world know that “Ladies
are pimps too” in his platinum selling single, “Dirt
off your Shoulder”.
In
any case, this book is simply another extension of my female
entrepreneur empowerment initiative. It is my way of saying, “You go
girl!” The wonderfully multi-talented singer Beyonce
once
sang that, “A diva is the female version of a hustler.”
This is NOT true. A diva is a diva.
Women don’t need their own version.
Ladies are hustlers too!
